Why I Am Thankful To Serve Others

I like to draw and often people ask me if I could do a little drawing for a committed or a community event or something at work. I just delivered a poster for a church summer kid's club. I do not know if it is talent, or if I have a gift for art but others ask, so I say, "I will be glad to do that for you."

Feeling Thankful
As I was delivering the poster for the church kid's club I felt very grateful.

  • I felt grateful to be able to do something to serve and help out.
  • I felt thankful that some one thought enough of me and my slight ability to ask.
  • I felt thankful that doing this is some little way of giving back to God for his blessings.
  • I felt thankful that the project turned out well that is because I often asked God to be my helper. So I am thankful for God's help.
  • I was surprised that it turned out to be fun.
  • I felt wonder of fellowship with God through service. Like he was bent over the poster with a paint brush next to me.
  • I felt thankful that "even a cup of cold water given in his name will not lose its reward."

The Critical Difference.
It is easy to be thankful when you get something or are the recipient of a service or honor. It is something else to be thankful to be the giver of a gift or to be the one who does a service. It is not logical to appreciate to be the one doing a sacrifice and giving of oneself.

Others may feel that their time is being taken away from other more pleasant activities, or that their service should be paid for, or that others do not have the right to ask.

When I see all the good I have received from God and all the ways he has blessed me I want to give service back to him. When I reflect on how God loves me I want to love him back; and the love he gives was an active doing love, so I want to give back in doing things.

My Need and His Need
When I needed a Savor Jesus did not hesitate, he said, "Here I am." and left heaven and died on the cross for me; so if Jesus needs someone to paint a poster, hold open a door or clean a toilet I do not hesitate to say, "I will be glad to do that for you."
