A Surprising Reason To Be Thankful For Others

Something has been happening in a small group of friends which has given me something to be thankful for that I did not expect.

I direct a small part of a kids club at church called awanas. My class is the kindergarten class, it is a fun and easy class to teach and I have been doing it so long that a lot of it has become rote for me. We have a few teenage helpers who come; some are there really trying to serve God and the kids, but I am sure one or two are there because their families pressure them into going since their younger brothers or sisters are attending the club.

All these youth helpers are a wonderful bunch of kids.

I have tried to do things to build community and relationships in our little team.
     * I have given each one of them extra responsibilities.
     * I have challenged them to become more mature in their leadership.
     * I have tried to organize a few social opportunities so we can just get together and have fun.

The idea of doing something together just for fun is new for me, it is a reach beyond just going and "Doing Awana Club."

I wanted to focus on building relationships in and among the team because I have come to see that a church ministry or service project without relationships is only a program, but when you focus on relationships you can do much more and it goes far beyond that particular event or project.

Teenagers normally congregate in little groups and natural divisions occur based on interest, background, and stuff like that. But as we try to focus on a relationship-based ministry I have begun see the divisions are melting and the youth team is becoming united. They are getting along and they all are looking for each other.

I am surprised at how much I am enjoying seeing relationships grow and friendships begin in our club.  I am thankful that God opened my eyes to the possibilities of a relationship based ministry. I am thankful to see the youth on my team smile at each other and look forward to being together.

I am thankful not because I am getting something out of it like a reward or payback but because I know it is important and good. I am thankful to see their friendships happen and that I had a little part in it happening. I am thankful for what I have been learning about serving God and the community through this experience.

How The Big Boss Made Me Thankful Today.

These days I work in the mailroom at a not-for-profit where I mostly do printing, order supplies, perform light maintenance, and the usual 'go for' stuff.  It is not hard work and except for the occasional gremlin in the machinery, it is mostly easy.

For a while I had been bothered that some of the bulletin boards in the lobby were not up to date; in fact, they were so out of date that I do not remember anybody refreshing them with new material since I started this job over a year ago.

Looking at what had been there I guessed the theme of each section was and found newer material that was relevant and began to put up new displays on the cork bulletin boards.  At first, they looked dull, so I dressed them up the way school teachers used to do when I was a kid by using colored paper to make little frames and borders.  It took a few days of tinkering in the extra moments here and there between other tasks that I was assigned, but finally, the bulletin boards looked interesting and fresh.

I was very proud of my humble efforts, though I know most people could do better.

Today on my lunch break the executive director came up to me and paid me a great compliment; he said that he was impressed by the bulletin boards and had often wanted someone to do that very thing.  He said it was creative and also had the best choice of the information displayed.

It made my day to think that the big boss would take time out of his busy day to notice a little thing like a bulletin board and look for me to say he liked my work.

Why I Am Thankful for Hope

It is one thing to be thankful for the blessings that we can see, touch and experience, but we should be thankful the things we do not easily see.

Hope is one of the things that I am thankful for even though I do not physically see it. Hope gives us the motivation to go ahead with things that may not be possible. Hope enables us to dream, and our dreams themselves become the stuff that wraps our hope up and keeps it alive when other sources are lacking. Hope defies the current truths and brings the myth of a better world to reality.

I am thankful for hope because it gives comfort when facts are discouraging. People may point out the problems and the difficulties which deflate a person's vision but hope keeps on believing.

I am thankful for hope because without it I would have given up on every important effort in life. I would have seen failures and stopped, I would have taken discouragement to heart, I would have stayed in bed and not faced the next day- but hope speaks louder than those things.

Hope keeps the picture of success in our hearts and helps our feet step steadily toward that image. It has picked me up when I have fallen down and whispered the vision of success back into me.

Hope must be a gift of God. It is contrary to the realities around us but without it the realities around us would be unendurable.

Were it not for those who treasured hope and pursued it many blessings in our world would not be here. They are the ones who sacrifice and pay the price for their dreams because hope said it could be done. Hope honored them and they have become those who we admire and consider noble examples of the best in humanity.

I am thankful for hope.

How I Became Thankful For Other People That Inspire Me

These days I am working a second job at a department store as a cashier to help with extra expenses of the Christmas season. I work there after my shift at the grocery store and finish at 11PM.

You can tell when a customer is going to be a problem. Cashiers get this sense and then avoid the ones that are going to have a lot of needs and request, like for checking prices, argue about coupons or want everything bagged in some special way, meanwhile, the line backs up and the next customer blames you for making them wait.

Late last night a man and his wife in modest clothing were slowly pushing a cart loaded with toys past the registers. I suspect other cashiers began to busy themselves so they didn't make eye contact, which is a sure invitation to come to their line. I am paid to do my job, so I waved them over to my check out station.

The cart was over full with every kind of toy; dolls, books, arts and crafts, building blocks, sports equipment, balls, action figures of superheroes, games, and more than I can remember. As the total ran into the hundreds I began to look at the couple wondering what kind of family they had since the toys were all ages and interest.

"You must have a lot of kids and grandkids," I said.

"No, these are not for our family."

"Oh," I looked at them.

"Every year we give to 'Toys For Tots.' We drop the toys off at the fire station where they collect the toys and give them to needy children. For some children, it is the only toy they get.

I was amazed- they were spending hundreds!  They did not wear fine clothes, the wedding rings were modest, his shoes were falling apart and his shirt was frayed at the sleeves, this couple was not upper income, possibly not even middle income.

I gave the total with the expectation that they would say it was too much and then begin the frustrating process of taking things off the purchase so they could afford it all.

"We will be splitting the payment up." He said as he held out some cash in his callous worn hand. I counted the twenties and tens and told them the remaining balance. Next, he gave some gift cards for small sums.

I felt for this couple, I have observed as a cashier that when people are having money problems they split the payment in different ways to draw from multiple meager sources.

"Put $150.00 on this card." He said swiping a credit card through the card reader. "And the rest on her debit card."

They spent more on kids that they do not know and will never meet than I earn in two weeks on both of my jobs.

"I hope you don't spend all year paying this off." I offered sympathy for what I thought was sure to be a burden on their income.

"No, we plan for it; we set money aside and sometimes I get extra work and put a little away."

As they left carefully pushing a shopping cart that had toys piled three feet high, I had a feeling as if the angles above were looking down as a witness to their act of gracious giving.

I felt humbled by their generosity. I am thankful to have met them and inspired by their act of sacrificial kindness. I pray that our Heavenly Father blesses their kindness and rewards them liberally for their sacrifice. I hope in some small way to follow their example of giving.

Why I Am Thankful To Get Off Work A Little Early Today.

Normally I work at the grocery store until three or four every day. I was sorry when I found out that my son was going back to college on a flight that left at 4 PM and I would not be able to get to see him off. Even if I was to get off of work at three he would have already left, in fact he would have to be at the airport at three to give time for all the check in and security.

I looked at my schedule a few days ago and noticed what looked like an error because my schedule said I was to be off at 1:45 PM today instead of three or four. I thought it must be a mistake and will be corrected by the time I started work this morning, but when I clocked in today I checked the schedule and found that instead my schedule remained unchanged and I was still slated to punch out at 1:45. Now it was time to ask my supervisor, and was advised the hours were cut throughout the store to accommodate end of quarter accounting.

At 1:45 PM I clocked out and was able to surprise my daughter with a ride home from school as well as being able to ride with my son and wife to the airport and see my son depart on his way back to college.

I was especially thankful since I'm working two jobs, (almost all cashiers do), and I was not able to spend much time with my son on his visit home. It was a small thing but an important thing.

The early day even allowed my wife and me to do a little bit of shopping together.

I do not believe circumstances like this are just coincidental but I believe the hand of the Almighty who loves those who seek him has arranged these events with the purpose of giving little blessings. I am grateful for a Loving Heavenly Father.

Thankful For Being Unhurt In An Accident.

I am a very safe driver but not everyone else is, so I always watch out for the other guy. I was doing just that- looking to the right merge lane at an intercession with a very limited merge lane when a driver coming on the left slammed into my car.

Even though there are many complications to the situation I am thankful for many others.
     * No one was hurt.
     * The emergency services were on the scene within minutes.
     * There was no traffic on the road to interrupt or add extra danger.
     * I was able to drive away.
     * It was on my way home from work not on my way to work.
     * It was only three blocks from my house.

I am thankful that the Lord was watching over me. I believe I began that day like many others with a prayer asking His protection and guidance. I wonder if I had not asked God that morning for protection if the collision would have been worse and involve serious injury. I believe in God, I believe He watches over us and I believe He answers prayer. So all my gratitude is directed to the Almighty.

There are complications with insurance and repairs and transportation for me and my family but I believe that God has blessings in store as we stay faithful to him through these issues.

Why I am Thankful for the Dentist

Most people agree that going to the dentist is not an appointment they look forward to. I have been in the chair many times and have had numerous fillings and other procedures. So going to the dentist makes me think, "Here we go again; needles, and pain that you have to pay money for.

My loving wife scheduled an exam and cleaning on my behalf. I saw it on the calendar with alarm and have looked at the calendar with askance ever since. The day arrived in spite of my best attempt to put it out of my memory. I thought I would contrive some reason to cancel but didn't know what was worst- facing the dentist or facing my wife who would be hurt that I slighted her care for my dental well-being. So considering the lesser of the two evils I showed up for the appointment on time.

Like most Americans, I go for my yearly cleaning and exam every five or six years. I knew I was in for it.  The dentist gently took x-rays that showed immediately on the computer monitor, he carefully moved the mirror around my mouth and with a probe prodded my gums and teeth. "I'm sure my mouth is full of cavities," I confessed. "Nope no cavities," he replied. "But you are brushing too hard, use a soft brush." He then showed me how I needed to improve my brushing so I will not wear out the enamel. Who would have thought? I figured I was not doing too good a job and it turns out I was actually doing too good a job!

I am thankful that I do not have any cavities or problems. I am thankful to learn ways of improving my brushing. I am most thankful for my good wife who cared enough to schedule the appointment for me.

Why I am Thankful for the night sky.

Last night I was wandering around the internet and I came to a link about astronomy, it said that at dusk the planet Venus would be its brightest all year and it would be easy to see since it would be near the moon. Since it was almost dusk I looked outside and I felt God was with me and saying, "Let's just take a look shall we?"

So I went out and looked up and there was the moon and next to it a bright point of light- Venus! I climbed to the top of the hill behind my house where the school playing field is and from the center of the field gazed at the scene in the sky as night fell. It was truly beautiful.

I marveled at the blessing of finding out by accident of the rare sight and the timing that was perfect to view it. God's creation is beautiful and I worship him for it with thanksgiving.

The stars began to come out and as each one did it pondered the vastness of creation and therefore the even greater vastness of Him Who Created.

I wondered if The Heavenly Father could do such marvels in the night sky what can He do in the lives of those who love him and are willing to be used. (c) Adron

How A Memorial Service Made Me Thankful

Today I attended the memorial service of a family member who passed from this world to eternity with the angles and saints in heaven.

The memorial was as picture perfect as one could have wished, as if the Almighty was adding his amen to a life of service and devotion. Family and friends sat in a house of worship while others gave tribute to our dear uncle in words and readings. Clergy and congregation offered prayers and sang beautiful hymns of comfort and hope.

Testimonies were presented about his life of service which was a tribute to him and an inspiration to us. Some spoke of experiences shared with him that were noble and we all believed it is possible that we too could find grace to follow his example. Some spoke of his compassion and service and we felt that we wanted to walk in his footsteps as he was following the footsteps of Christ.

It was a beautiful service that left us all feeling touched and comforted. The service made us not sad at his passing but thankful to have known him during his sojourn on this earth.

I left the memorial service thinking that I am thankful to have known my wife's uncle; he was a godly and giving man. He served as a minster and was dedicated to the Lord, the church and community. He was a man who spoke out against injustice and took a stand for the oppressed. He was known to have an extraordinary sense of who was hurting and was quick to bring comfort no matter what the personal cost.

I am thankful to have seen his example.

I am thankful to recall conversations where he left me inspired and challenged.

I am thankful to see how one life can have a positive effect on so many others.

I pray that when I departure this earth others will feel grateful that they knew me.

Six Reasons We Are Not Thankful

We know it is a good thing to be a thankful person, but we just don't seem to get around to taking a few moments to give thanks to The Father for the many blessings he has given to us.

We give many reasons to not be thankful...
     * We just hurry from chore to task.
     * We have too many things to do.
     * We are faced with the urgent situations.
     * We are out of the practice.
     * We don't see that we have anything to be thankful for.
     * We don't think it is important.

None of these excuses stand up. Thankfulness is important, it is right and we should be thankful.

We think we are too busy to be thankful but the fact that you have something to do is something to be thankful for. Whatever it is God has entrusted it to you to do.

We have too many things to do is not an excuse to be thankful- it is a reason to be thankful.

An urgent situation is just a test and God must think you can pass it or else he would not give it to you. You should be thankful that He is watching and He cares.

That we do not practice thankfulness is a sad thing. We must be thankful to be healthy and to be happy.

We have many things to be thankful for; life, love, food, breath, friends, the sunshine, an able mind, to be alive and the list would go on forever.

It is important. God commands it and it is right.

Thankfulness prepares us for more blessings and shows us more of the blessings we already have. Don't let an excuse rob you of blessing. Be thankful; make a list, keep a journal or establish a daily time to reflect and give thanks to the Almighty.

What Happens When You Give Thanks For Every Little Thing?

I decided that I have not been diligent in the "Practice of The Presence of The Lord." (This is the idea of acting out the truth that God is always with you, and you can always talk to him.) I have daily Bible reading and prayer times but it is only a part of my personal walk with the Father.

I resolved to practice the Lord's presence by giving thanks God for everything that I could think of today, and express it by a short prayer to the Father of Blessings. I had many, many opportunities to give thanks to the Almighty.

I thanked the Lord for...

  • The beautiful sky.
  • The people I work with.
  • The people I work for.
  • The people I saw walking by.
  • The health I enjoyed.
  • The ability to work.
  • The friends I saw when I saw them.
  • The lunch I enjoyed.
  • Sitting outside on my break.
  • My supervisor at work.
  • The safe ride to work.
  • Seeing a church friend during the day.
  • The quietness of a peaceful home.
  • The food I had.
  • The flowers in my wife's garden.
  • Fellowship with friends of faith at work.
  • The company I work for.
  • Friendships I experienced.

It came and went because I didn't remember to be thankful every moment but having tried to thank God for everything I felt I was more focused on God and was more aware of his blessings. I felt more positive and grateful. It felt that I was doing what is right.

When things happened that would normally cause me to be frustrated and think resentful thoughts I found myself thinking nothing of it, like it was no big deal.

It seemed that I was receiving more blessings than usual or maybe I was just seeing them more.

I will continue to attempt to practice the attitude of reflective thanksgiving in everything I can.

Why I am Thankful For Another Birthday

The calendar says I am a year older today. We are always growing older not just all of a sudden on a special day.

A birthday is an excellent time to look back and consider one's life. There are many things I am thankful for this year. I have seen many blessings in my family,

This year...

     * My wife and I have had some pleasant dates together.
     * My kids have had some significant accomplishments.
     * I have made a new friend who shares many of my values and we have had many rewarding conversations together.
     * We may not be out of debt but we are no worse off.
     * We had a wonderful vacation this summer.
     * My daughter and I had a good time working together at a service project at church.
     * My son and I have worked together on at job where I developed a huge amount of respect for him and his work attitude.
     * An opportunity to get extra work came and I have earned a little extra pay.
     * I have had several successes at projects around the house.
There are many more to list but it would become boring.

A YEAR OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH
This year I have felt my walk with God to be more close and reaching into new areas in my life. I have been seeing more need for prayer and a sense of partnership with The Almighty in things that I used to think were too small for God or things I should handle myself.

This year I have been trying to take pause to quietly listen to His spirit give me leading and promptings more often. I have been asking God what I should do in this situation or that- not just those huge major life decisions. This deeper intimacy with God has been my greatest blessing this year.

Why I Am Thankful For Mondays

Most people wake up on Monday morning and think, "Oh, too bad, the weekend is over and now the hard week begins again."

Sometimes I feel that way too. I feel that the weekend is a time of more quality or worth when I can pursue fun or recreation. Now Monday is here and I have to be a worker who labors at job, home life and community service- it is no fun.

WHOSE WEEK IS IT?
God has given me work as a blessing which many do not have. The blessing is not just to earn money but to know the one who gives the blessing better, in a sense God is in the blessing.

A week of work may present me with a lot of hard tasks but God will be there for each one. We think that we can't call on God for the little things but wait for some crisis before we cry out to him, but every little task of my workday is an opportunity for fellowship with the Creator. Each task offers me a test to partner with God in doing well at work and service.

RESOLVE
I am the same person no matter if it is Monday, Sunday or Wednesday. I have the same blessings no matter what day of the week it is. If I am living unto God each day the day does not change who I am.

I must remember to be thankful for Mondays; it is a commitment to do so because of a conviction that God wants me to be a thankful person.

I must remember each day is a gift no matter what day of the week it is. It is a gift prepared by God and a gift full of his purposes. If I embrace that gift I am embracing God's plan for me for that day.

Thankful for Our Twenty Fifth Anniversary

It has always been my belief that love is a matter of giving sacrificially. It is a kind of giving that asks nothing in return and sets the interest of the other ahead of your own. Having tried to keep to that ideal I have found that I have received more blessings that I have given.

The morning I write this is the morning of our twenty fifth wedding anniversary. It is a joy to me that I have been married to a wonderful woman for so many years.

  • She has cared for me like no one else ever would.
  • She has always made me a better person.
  • She has taught me how to grow up, without ever saying, "Why don't you just grow up!"
  • She puts up with a lot, (us moody poets and artists are very difficult people to live with).
  • The best times of my life have been with her.
  • No one could ever take her place.
  • If I had the chance I would marry her all over again.
I could write out a very, very, very long list of the many ways she has been a blessing to me and the joy of my life but no one would have the time to read it.

I am thankful that God brought her to me. I couldn't imagine life without her. I dare not imagine what a mess I would be without her. I thank God for her every day.

Why Thankful For Little Things.

We can easily see why we should be thankful for the big things. If we have a new job when we really needed it we are very thankful. If we are healed of a dread disease we are thankful. If we avoid a huge accident we are thankful.

There are many more events daily than those huge life events. Today, I thought I would pick up a couple of pizzas after work and bring them home for family dinner. I felt it was something I should do, maybe God was prompting me to do it since they were on sale. Yet I worried, since my wife does most of the cooking because she is so much better at it, so I wondered if it would be well received for me to intrude on her plans by bringing pizzas home.  I was worried that I spent too much money on them.

It turned out that she was tired and really didn't want to cook, so it was a good thing that I brought home the pizzas. I was thankful to be able to do something to make my wife's day a little easier. I was thankful she didn't see it as an intrusion into her plans for the evening.

It is just a little thing to bring home something; but it is one example of many daily situations that should cause us to be thankful.

And I really recommend Neuman's pizza.

Why I Am Thankful For What We Have

My wife came home from bringing a meal to a needy family in our church. She related to me about their difficulties. It was a family where the mom just had a serious health complication and the church was providing meals to help. The mother was absent from the family instead there is a grandparent, A sister in law in a wheelchair lives there also a single father with his son, all living in a small two or maybe three bedroom house.

I often look at the houses of others who seem to be well off, people who live in nice big houses and drive nice cars. I look at their possessions with envy. I wish I could have given my family nice vacations and a nice things. But compared to this family at our church I feel that I have it pretty good. We enjoy reasonably good health, we both have jobs, we are not behind on our bills, and  there is plenty of room in our town house to be comfortable.

God has blessed us and given us what is best for us. I do not imagine I will ever be able to afford those big things I covet but God is wise and gives what we need. I am grateful that he is good to us. The day may come when we are tested with illness, loss, or real poverty, I hope to be able to call on his grace when the time comes.

Thankful For Questions at the New Year

The New Year us here, in fact it may be a week old already. The logical thing would be to post something about how I am thankful for the last year and how I am thankful for the next year.

We measure our lives in many ways. We have days, hours, weeks, months, years, anniversaries, birthdays and so on. It is good and helpful to have these measurements but we forget the destination. We are not just a year closer to retirement or some other major event; nor is it just that we are a year closer to ending our pilgrimage on earth and taking a place in heaven. But are we a year closer to being the person God means for us to be? Have we grown in Christ likeness this last year and will the next year bring us further along to being more like our Savor and Lord?

I am thankful for all that the Lord has done for me and my family this last year and I am optimistic that the next year will lead to more blessings for which I will be thankful. I look back at my personal growth and feel that I have made some measurable progress toward the goal of every Christian- that of being worthy of the name Christian. Of all the blessings God has given me I feel very grateful for the gift that we may grow in the image of Christ.

Why be Thankful on Sunday

This morning when I got out of bed I felt very tired. Yesterday, Saturday was a hard day at work, and I slept poorly. It took a long time for the coffee to brew and as I watched it slowly dripping I debated whether or not I should go to church. My back hurt and my knee was sore. I felt that I had many excuses to call church off and get some rest on the day of rest.

I knew that going to church is the right thing to do. I knew God should be worshiped and thanked in the company of those who honor his name. So I went.

I still felt tired and my back still hurt, but I was glad I did. I was glad to be able to give worship to God. I was glad to sit with my family, and share some time together. I felt inspired by the worship.

I felt the day was blessed thereafter. I spent time with family members and got some chores done, enjoyed working on an art project and even a driving lesson with my teenage daughter. I wonder if the day would have gone so well if I just gave in to the temptation to lie in bed and skip church.

I know God is not going to be bribed into giving blessings; we don't approach him and say, "If I do this good thing, you can bless me for it."  We do the good thing because it is right and if God in his sovereignty and grace grants blessing it is to his glory not mine.

Why Give Thanks Over Again.

It is the end of my day and I want to think about what I have to be thankful for, but nothing jumps into my mind.  This is part of the struggle of being thankful. God has been good and we should thank him even if it just doesn't spontaneously sprout out from us.

Sometimes it is that we feel like we are recycling old thanks. We feel like we thanked God for that thing yesterday or last week and so it is redundant to express to God our thanks again. But that is a wrong attitude. God has continued to bless and so we should continue to be thankful. If it is something we expressed thanks for in the past it is still good to thank him again.

It is different when something is exciting and fun; we thank God then and he is honored it just might be more honor when it is not an emotional response. To be thankful when the coals of emotion are cooled off may be the greater thanks, because it is a decided and deliberate thanks.

I am thankful for...

    * My family. I was able to spend special moments with several of my family today.
    * That my wife found some good deals when shopping and saved money on needed things.
    * For my church and the ministry of the leaders there.
    * For a day off from work and a job to go to.
    * That I wrote a poem. (Read my poems in my other blog).
    * For the washing machine. It would be so hard to clean clothes without it.
    * For our home.
    * I enjoyed some hobbies today.
    * Though I spent a lot of time driving my kids different places I was given safety on the road.
    * For our country.
    * That God has watched over our family and kept us safe.

Some of these things were mentioned in past post, but I am still thankful for them, and God is still honored when I give him thanks.

Why I am Thankful For My Boss

Most people are not thankful for their boss or supervisor at work. A lot of people feel that their manager gets in the way of the work or is always telling them what to do. Some bosses are rude or not considerate of the people they supervise, some are just poor managers.

I have a part time job at a grocery store, it is hard work. You are always standing on your feet, you don't get regular breaks, the groceries can be backbreaking to lift in and out of shopping carts after a few hours and many customers have problems that are hard to fix.  It is a fast pace environment where we are always needing to stop one thing and jump to another. The pay is not that great.

AS A CHRISTIAN
I try to be the best employee in the store. *

     * I try to follow every instruction carefully and quickly.
     * I try to have a willing attitude and will rather be wronged than to be a complainer.
     * If asked to go get something I trot as quickly as is safe.
     * If asked to clean something I make it shine.
     * If there is a moment of idleness I search for some task to do, like cleaning.
     * If asked to do anything my automatic response is to say, "I'll be glad to do that."
     * If asked to do a nasty task such as clean the restrooms I do it joyfully and diligently.

IN THE BOSS'S OFFICE
I was confused when the boss sent someone to my station at the cash register with the message to go to the office- normally this is not a good thing. The boss said, "Come inside I need you to sign something. Just know this will be a permanent comment on your employment file."
"What is it?" I asked.
"A Record of Exceptional Service." He then proceeded to read a letter of commendation he wrote giving praise to my manner of work, with my willingness to do whatever is needed, and my good attitude.  "We are aware of your diligence and we know we never say thank you enough." He said, shaking my hand.

I was very grateful to be recognized by management. As I left his office I explained it is by the power of Jesus living in me that I am able to live as I do. I am thankful that Jesus is in my life and he enables me to be an encouragement and light in my community.
