On a holiday to a cabin Virginia I picked up a book from the shelf that was lost among the many others. It looked small and easy to read during the quiet moments of a short holiday. It was by Parker J. Palmer, titled Let Your Life Speak- Listening For The Voice Of Vocation.
The author is a Quaker, and since I have made it a point to read writings outside my faith tradition I have found the writings of Quakers to be clear, thoughtful, refreshing and relevant to the modern dialogue in ways that other faith communities avoid.
It turned out to be a good choice. The author had a lot to teach me, and much of it I am still digesting. I will buy this book and others by the author. I cannot begin to summarize the ideas of the book since I was reading it quickly and didn't finish it. The book speaks of embracing self, accepting self, and finding vocation, (or what my faith community calls identifying your God given purpose). He tells of his own struggle and many people will relate to him as much as I did.
Clearly, it was God who led me to this book out of all the books on that shelf in all of the cabins we could have visited.
* I am thankful that God spoke to me afresh about faith.
* I am thankful that God used the author to speak to me about my identity.
* I am thankful that God used the book to speak to me about his purpose for me.
* I am thankful that God used it to spark a renewal in my spiritual walk.
* I am thankful that embracing who I am created to be is liberating.
* I am thankful that God used it to cause me to examine my own personal beliefs.
I pray God blesses Dr. Palmer for his encouragement to those of us who are fortunate to find his writings.
